Sugar Maple

Sugar Maple  7 x 5 acrylic on stretched canvas SOLD
I've not been at my easel enough lately. This little study at least took me out of my usual figurative/still-life groove, so that's a good thing. It's done from a photo I snapped last fall of a stunningly vibrant Sugar Maple. It was such a fabulous red against a brilliant sky.

  1. The cool shadow side of the tree is really lovely vibrating next to the side in the sun. I think the sky holes are beautifully painted with the branches showing through.
The maple tree is a marvel to behold during the fall. Our cottonwood trees are golden and only the Japanese maples turn red and we do not have many of those.

  2. Thank you, Julie. This was a departure for me, but the tree was so stunningly vibrant I had to give it a try. I so admired your English Wild Roses -- you manage to be so impressionistic, yet capture the forms. Marvelous!

  3. Nature provided the palette on this! The reds are so rich and vibrant against that sky. I can see why you were inspired to paint it!

    1. Thank you, Kaethe. It was just a little study, but it helped me get over being afraid to tackle trees.
I think your painting "Al" is a knockout!
