Taking Off SOLD

This is another of my paintings now at Martins Gallery for the summer.  At 30 x 24, it's larger than average for me, but I wanted the impact those dimensions would bring.  I was especially delighted when the gallery owners placed it in the window. Here in the tourist region of Muskoka, this time of year means kids at camp and families at lakeside cottages. "Taking Off" is meant to evoke the joy of summer at the lake, whether cottage or camp.

Clivia and Shells Redux

I am delighted that my award-winning painting Clivia and Shells (30"x24" acrylic on canvas) has been selected for the Muskoka Arts and Crafts show at the Canada Summit Centre (Canadian spelling) in Huntsville, Ontario. I delivered the painting this week to this beautiful venue where it will be displayed through mid- November. The Centre is a fabulous showcase for art, but it was originally built for the G-8 summit in 2010 and serves as a multifaceted community center.

Clivia and Shells

This is the third of three paintings I'll have at the Muskoka Arts and Crafts 39th Annual Spring Members' Show. The show begins with the opening reception and awards presentation Friday night and runs through the weekend. I've been part of this wonderfully-diverse showcase for more than 15 years. Sunday afternoon I'm doing a demonstration -- something I always enjoy because people come by to chat as I paint.

Black Lace

This oil painting will always be special to me. It was part of my first solo gallery show in 2009. It was also the image used on all the promotional materials, and the first piece to sell at the show. Today I'd likely paint it differently -- perhaps better, I'd hope -- but I'll always look back at it with much affection.

Seated Nude

For a period of time I worked a great deal in pastel. This rather large classic nude was one of the pieces I've kept and it hangs in my studio.

Salon

At 24 by 30 inches, "Salon" is one of my larger pieces -- a traditional figurative in oil on stretched canvas. I used the complementaries of yellow and purple to provide a lush backdrop for a classic nude pose.

Muskoka General Store

This painting is based on one of several old general stores to be found around Muskoka's cottage country. Over the years since we moved here, many of these wonderful stores have disappeared or been modernized. Those that have endured are a charming reminder of a bygone era. Selling everything from sunhats to soda, and detergent to dew worms, they remain a popular attraction for summer visitors.

This is one of several figurative paintings I've done that feature this model. I liked the quiet serenity in her expression, and I enjoyed painting both the lace and the sheen on the satin gown.
